Vollintine Evergreen Historic District

The Vollintine Evergreen Historic District (VEHD) was adopted and signed into law in 2021 by the City of Memphis - establishing one of the largest historic districts in the city.

The Vollintine Evergreen Historic District Design Guidelines provide for the preservation of the unique qualities that make all of the areas of our community special.

The Historic District - or “Landmarks” as it has been called because it is supervised by the Memphis Landmarks Commission - has been a community discussion and process that began in earnest in 2016. The long process of discovery, discussions, documents, readings, hearings, and finally approval was lead by the VECA Historic Committee in cooperation with the Memphis Landmarks Commission, local stakeholders, and by the work of The Development Studio, LLC of Memphis, TN.

VECA is proud to be a local landmarks historic district (VEHD) in the City of Memphis. We understand that you have questions and want to know what process to follow if you are doing exterior alterations or beginning a new construction project. The VECA Historic Committee is here to help you! Below are resources to help you understand & navigate the process:

The V&E Neighborhood Historic Design Guidelines and Users Guide

VEHD has a set of Design Guidelines approved by the Memphis Landmarks Commission (MLC). The Design Guidelines seek to assist property owners with maintaining and updating their properties within the V&E neighborhood. The design guidelines guide making decisions concerning new construction and renovations that affect the exterior-facing appearance of properties, as well as the overall character of the historic district.

We also have a list of Frequently Asked Questions (and answers!) available here to open and download. You can find the map of the VEHD here.

Questions Regarding the COA Process or the VEHD Design Guidelines

If you have questions related to VEHD’s Design Guidelines or questions about the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) process for your exterior work projects, please email our Historic committee at historic@veca.org or email Memphis Landmarks Commission (MLC Staff) at landmarks@memphistn.gov.

Memphis Landmarks Commission (MLC)

The MLC reviews work visible from the street, which includes new construction, demolition, relocation of structures, and different types of exterior alterations within the historic districts. For a quick reference on which projects require a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA), see this handy flyer. For further questions related to new construction, renovation, restoration, COAs & Building Permits, or to report Landmarks violations, please contact MLC Staff via the City of Memphis Develop 901 Website.
